All About Edger Blades: Everything You Need to Know

Hi folks, Stu here from Main Street Mower. We're a family-owned outdoor power dealer. Today, we're diving deep into edger blades. We're covering all the options and everything you need to know.

The Basics

Untreated Blades

We'll start with the basic blade: the Oregon 40-139. This is an untreated blade, the go-to for many landscapers. You'll begin the day with a new blade, and by the end, it's worn down and not cutting cleanly. It's a cheap option but doesn't last long, making you re-edge more often.

Hardened Blades

Next, we have the rotary 6107 hardened blade. This one is heat-treated twice and dipped in oil. These blades are a bit more expensive but last longer and cut cleaner. They also come straighter, reducing the chance of damaging your machine.

Premium Blades

Then there’s Steel's premium blade, priced at around $5.99. This blade is heavier, more balanced, and will likely last longer. We'll be testing if it's worth the extra cost.

Specialty Blades

Rotary Quad Blade

The 6276 blade from rotary features a four-point design. This design helps it stay in the cut better and reduces chipping at the driveway. It’s rumored to last longer due to more surface area, though it’s pricier at around $8.

Golden Edge Blade

Finally, we have the Golden Edge carbide blade. It's painted gold and claims to last 50 times longer than standard blades, at a cost of $42.50. We’re curious if it’s worth it, and we’ll be testing that out soon.

Maintenance and Replacement

Changing edger blades is straightforward. Use the locking rod that comes with your edger, place the scrunch on the nut, and turn it clockwise. Replace your old blade with a new one, and you’ll see a huge difference in performance.

Performance Testing

Two weeks from now, we'll be out in the field testing all these blades. We’ll measure how long they take to establish an edge in time and feet. We'll check if the premium blades provide better performance and longevity.
