What type of oil should I run in my br600?
You should be using the STIHL black oil (which is called HP Super) or the STIHL silver oil (which is called Ultra). The HP super is a synthetic blend and the Ultra is a pure synthetic.
Your blower requires at least a synthetic blend because it is STIHL's new 4 mix engine. The four mix engine is a little more complex than the traditional 2 cycle engine and the standard High Performance Orange Oil was causing carbon build up and leading to future valve problems.
What if the air vane gets clogged? Has that ever happened?
Neither me or any of our mechanics have ever seen it go bad. Attached is a picture of what it looks like, it is the plastic piece that is sticking up by the flywheel.
What are your opinions on Briggs and Stratton ready start?
Its a very nice feature to have and it really does work. The engine will crank on the first pull most every time and you don't have to pump a primer bulb or throw a choke lever. The ready start is actually an automatic choking feature that uses an air vane to open and close the choke touch free. There is also a feature that keeps the choke off when the engine is already hot and doesn't need choke, preventing flooding. And as intricate as it sounds I have yet to see a broken one.
Can I pull a yard roller with a Toro Zero Turn?
Toro supplies a hitch kit for the Z4200 as part of the available attachments. That hitch is the one pictured in the photo and we have it available for $31. That said, these mowers can pull up to 500lbs and the pumps are rated to pull twice as much as your typical lawn tractor.
There are several of the lawn rollers available. One, for example, ranges from 40lbs dry to 250lbs when fully filled with water. Some weigh up to 400lbs, so even those can be handled by the Z4200 as well as other Toro Zero Turn mowers.
What should I do if I have old gas in my tank?
The first thing you want to do is remove all of the old gas and replace it with new gas, this will help to dilute any remain old gas in the lines. Then you'll want to pump the primer bulbs several times to try and push out any old gas that may be beginning to gum up the carburetor (the rule of thumb is that gas last for 90 days before starting to turn to jelly).
After this you'll be ready to give it a go and start it up. If it cranks, run it for a good while to further clean out the old gas. If it doesn't start you may need a mechanic to clean/replace your carburetor.
Starter Cord Stuck
When the starter cord won't pull, you likely have one of two potential problems that will need isolation. Either your recoil (pull starter) is jammed up, or your engine is frozen up.
First, remove the Spark Plug and use a wire to tie down your engine break handle
Next, remove your recoil from the unit (its usually attached by 4 bolts)
With the recoil off the unit, you'll now be able to tell if the problem is in the recoil (pull starter) by pulling the handle in and out, kind of like a yo-yo.
If the recoil is working properly then you must check your engine to see if it is locked up. Do this by either turning the blade or by turning the flywheel.
